Books in 2011

  • De huishoudster en de professor, Yoko Ogawa (v. cool story about a woman working for a professor whose short term memory is only 80 minutes long)
  • Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, Janet Evanovich (mildly amusing story about a bond enforcer and barbecue ribs that never really got through to me)
  • The Importance of Being a Bachelor, Mike Gayle (yay, chicklit about men!)
  • The Troubled Man, Henning Mankell (loved this last installment of the Kurt Wallander series, but hated the outcome in the epilogue; can we change that please?)
  • The Unbearable Lightness of Scones, Alexander McCall Smith (more pitter-patter about people living their life in Edinburgh, and I was entertained again- but not as much as before)
  • Een dame in de keuken, collected stories and recipes by Elizabeth David (she’s a bit strict about food, isn’t she?)
  • De Kostwinner, Henk Rijks (what do you do if you end up with a container full of cocaine in your back yard? why, sell it, of course)
  • Nieuwe buren, Saskia Noort (lots of sex, lots of psychological crises and then four dead bodies)
  • Het verloren symbool, Dan Brown (a Dan B story I hadn’t read yet, and now I want to be a freemason)
  • Close up, Esther Verhoef (oof, this story of a red haired girl and an odd photographer who have people dropping dead around them kept me up a few late honeymoon nights)
  • The importance of being married, Gemma Townley (fluff about a girl who finds love while trying to get someone to marry her for an inheritance, accidentally read twice and only mildly amusing)
  • Eenmaal, andermaal, verliefd, Jill Mansell (cute girl moves to the country, works for a gay father of a teenager and falls in love with the town’s hunk- what’s not to love?)
  • The Complaints, Ian Rankin (I couldn’t really care about two police officers set up for crimes they hadn’t committed)
  • Mama Tandoori, Ernest van der Kwast (I laughed, I swallowed around a lump in my throat, I had a thoroughly good time with this book about a fierce Indian mother who lives for her children, and for savings)
  • The Pyramid, Henning Mankell (and now I want to take a trip to Sweden and read all the other Wallander books)
  • The To Do List, Mike Gayle (a man chronicles a year of doing the 1277 things on his list and inspired me to make a list of my own)
  • Keys to Good Cooking, Harold McGee (not quite finished with this one yet, but have already learned I need to wash my melons before cutting them)
  • The School for Husbands, Wendy Holden (it is no good when fluff makes an attempt at seriousness)
  • Diary of a Bad Year, J.M. Coetzee (opinions on the world plus a story of an aging writer and a beautiful woman: I like, a lot)
  • Size Doesn’t Matter, Meg Cabot (the fluff continues, with a college administrator trying to find her boss’s killer and falling in love with her landlord)
  • The Un-Domestic Goddess, Sophie Kinsella (more fluff, this time delicious fluff about a lawyer who leaves the City, becomes a house keeper and falls in love- of course.)
  • The Nearly-Weds, Jane Costello (entertaining fluff about bouncing back after being abandoned at the altar)
  • Knielen op een bed violen, Jan Siebelink (when a wife sticks around for her husband’s descent into blackest Christianity, I want to scream at her, but half admire her too)
  • 44 Scotland Street, Alexander McCall Smith (nothing much happens in a house in Edinburgh, but somehow I kept reading, quite entertained)
  • The Sunday Philosophy Club, Alexander McCall Smith (a young man drops to his death in a theatre and a philosoper finds out what happened)
  • De weg naar Kandahar, Jason Burke (I feared I’d bought an anti-islam diatribe, but instead got a thought-provoking account from a journalist working in Irak, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kashmir in the years before and after 9/11)
  • The Hindi Bindi Club, Monica Pradhan (sweet story about Indian mothers and American daughters, with recipes too)
  • The Foodie Handbook, Pim Techmuanvivit (talk about being hungry after reading a book)
  • Woestijnen van Arabie, Wilfred Thesiger (whew, this was hard work, with the sand and the worthy Bedu and the faithful camels)
  • Van je familie moet je het hebben, David Sedaris (probably funnier in the original language)
  • Climbing the Mango Trees, Madhur Jaffrey (when Jaffrey writes about picnics and fresh breads, I get hungry)
